Over the years I have realized that I am the ultimate procrastinator. I will put things off until the very last minute, when I have no choice but to get it done. This has proven to be such a terrible quality in my life and whether it was an assignment in university, a task at work, or simply something I need to complete in my day, I find that I ALWAYS regretted leaving it to the last minute after things were said and done.
Over the past year or so I have certainly proven to have a handle on this bad habit and have found more ways to motivate myself in life. So today I figured, why not share them with you? Here are my ten ways to be more productive in life.
1. Make a To-Do List
Putting things into list has been a life saver for me. I will admit all the time that I have a terrible short-term memory. I will have a though and then instantly forget it. Now I will either use the reminder app on my phone or use my little pink notebook that I will keep at home or in my purse to make mini lists.
2. Keep a Routine
My weekdays are very structured. I go to work, then come home. I know, exciting right! When I first started working after university I found that I lost my routine and time just seemed to pass by. Now I will dedicate time each night after work to either reading, running errands, working out, or working on my blog (or Netflix). Knowing that I have time allocated for each makes it easier to function.
3. Set Timelines
This is a great trick I learned in school that really helped me with self motivation. Especially If you are a procrastinator, setting timelines or deadlines for even small tasks will make a huge difference in your productivity. For example, my blog, I will always set a timeline for when I want to get a post up. I work best under pressure so I will set a deadline to have it completed for two days before I want to put it up.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Not getting enough sleep as you know has a huge effect on how your day will turn out. I can gladly say that I am a huge granny when it comes to going to bed. My workdays are very early so getting enough sleep is one of the only ways that I will be able to be productive throughout the day.
5. Use a planner
Having my planner is key to having my life in order. When it comes to remembering special dates, appointments, tasks, or bills I will write everything down in my planner. I am also a very visual person, so being able to write out my week or month in cute colours is very soothing for me.
For me, this is a great way to regroup mentally to continue to be productive in life. I like working out by myself because I’m able to think clearly and I find that each time I leave, I am more motivated to accomplish the things that I put on the back burner.
7. Make Time for Yourself
This goes along slightly with working out. Most people who are very busy are devoting a lot of time to helping others. Setting time aside each day for yourself will really allow you to regroup your thoughts. This will allow you to lower any stress levels you have and really focus on yourself to be more productive later on.
8. Just Do It
It’s not just a great slogan for Nike, it’s a great way to live your life. One thing that I’ve really learned so far this year is that if I spent the same amount of time thinking about getting something done as I do actually getting stuff done I would be a lot more productive. Especially when it comes to working out or doing chores I used to always say ‘Oh I will just do that later’ or ‘Well first I will do A, B, C and D and then I’ll do that’. Meanwhile I am saying this while scrolling on Pinterest. I’ve found that just forcing myself right into a task and getting it over with gives me so much extra time in my day.
9. Clean Your Space
Having a clean space is great for keeping your mind clear. I cannot work in a messy space, it will just give me anxiety. Before I start a task I need to make sure my area is clean and clear which will help increase how focused I am.
10. Bribe Yourself / Make Incentives
Giving myself treats is the best way for me to get myself in gear! Even if it’s giving myself a snack break after I complete a blog post or buying a new workout top after staying on track with my workout plan. These small incentives give me something to look forward to which will help me get through any task.
